The 3rd Edition (March 2012) Guys Cliffe House Book, 'Recollections of a Country Mansion', An Illustrated History of Guys Cliffe, authored by Terry Roberts is now available to online here at GuysCliffeHouse.org.uk...
This 3rd edition has an additional 23 pages, 107 pages in total. It is a fully-illustrated book featuring over 120 historical illustrations and photographs of Guys Cliffe House, many in full colour, documenting the history of this magnificent estate from the 5th to the 21st centuries...
The illustrations and photographs convey the extensive history of this unique house which has inspired so many artists and photographers over the centuries... Featured are the many stages of use and ownership of the Guys Cliffe Estate...
From it's humble beginnings as a secluded place of worship in the 5th century... The legends of Sir Guy of Warwick which secured it's place in folklore... The establishment of a chapel in the 15th century by will of King Henry V... The Tudor period ownership as a timber framed house... Leading into it's ownership and creation of the familiar Palladian Georgian style house by Caribbean St. Kitts and Nevis sugar plantation owner and slave trader Samuel Greatheed... This leads the reader right through it's ownership by the Heber-Percy family, it's use as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital in the First World War and during the Second World War as a Boys Home by the Waifs and Strays Society... Concluding "Recollections of a Country Mansion" details the house and estate post-war, it's decline into ruin, the tragic fire in 1992 and how it's now cared for, used and preserved right up to present day...
A chapter is also dedicated to the story of 'The Last Resident' of Guys Cliffe House, the very last person to call Guys Cliffe House a home... Roy Robinson came to Guys Cliffe House as a 13yr old boy in 1943, under the care of the Waifs and Strays Society and it's master Paul Field, who later went on to found The Childrens Family Trust (www.thecft.org.uk)... Roy had previously run away from each and every boys home, but never ran away from Guys Cliffe House... He was the last to be admitted to the Boys Home and the last to leave... Right up until his recent passing Roy still regularly visited Guys Cliffe House and cherishes those happy memories of his childhood spent exploring the house and it's sprawling estate lands...
'Recollections of a Country Mansion' was painstakingly researched and authored by Terry Roberts, a local historian and member of the preservation efforts at Guys Cliffe House for some 30 years... Taken from many sources including local and national archive material, past Guys Cliffe House owners family records and historians as far flung as the National History Archives on the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, 'Recollections of a Country Mansion' offers a superb snapshot into Guys Cliffe, 'A place of Legend and Mystery'...
